Why the QR code on your menu might stop working next year (and how to make one that won't)

A printed menu or a store sign requires an upfront investment. When that printed material relies on a digital connection, the longevity of that connection dictates the lifespan of the print. Many businesses print materials with QR codes that stop functioning within a few months. The code still scans, but the customer sees a dead web page or an error message. This happens because of a fundamental difference in how QR codes are generated and routed.

Where the redirect comes from

A QR code is simply a visual representation of text. When you type a web address into a free generation site, the site often does not encode your actual web address into the image. Instead, it generates a short link pointing to its own servers, and encodes that short link into the image.

When a customer scans the code, their phone visits the provider's server, which logs the scan, records the time, and then redirects the phone to your actual menu. This model allows the provider to count scans and eventually charge you a subscription fee to maintain the redirect. If a customer typically scans a tabletop display from 30 centimeters away, the QR code must be at least 3 centimeters wide. Shorter addresses scan faster

The density of the data also affects scanning speed. A long web address creates a dense, complex pattern of small squares. A short web address creates a simple pattern of large squares. Simple patterns scan faster in low light or at odd angles.
