Why stamp it
A leaked ID copy can be used to open accounts or take out loans. Writing the purpose and date across the image makes it hard to present elsewhere and shows where it leaked from. Many banks and carriers ask for copies marked this way.
Where to place it
Run the text diagonally across the face and numbers, not just the margins — margins can be cropped off. Keep opacity around 30–40% so the name and date of birth stay readable.
Combine with masking
Numbers that must not be visible at all need masking, not a watermark. Cover them first (crop tool or any paint program), then stamp here. Bundle into a PDF with images → PDF if the recipient needs one.
Batches
Drop the ID, statement and proof of address together and they all get the same stamp, delivered as a ZIP. The image is redrawn on a canvas, so EXIF location data is not carried over.
Tips for common situations
Use Diagonal Tiling to Deter Misuse
Diagonal repeating text across the full image makes it difficult to erase the watermark with photo editors. Adjust opacity so that the overlay is clearly visible but does not obscure the underlying document details.
Stamp Purpose Text on ID Copies
Adding a dated purpose line such as 'FOR VERIFICATION ONLY' establishes clear usage context and deters secondary misuse. This tool overlays text only and does not redact or black out sensitive digits — apply redaction separately if needed.
Center and Rotate for Design Proofs
When protecting design comps or illustrations, center the watermark text at a 30–45 degree angle to cover the main composition area. Choose white or black lettering based on the artwork's tonal range and reduce opacity so clients can still review the design.

Screens and numbers from actually running this tool with a sample file with no personal data (2026-10-06, Chromium-based browser on a Mac). Results vary with your input and device.
The default text was tiled diagonally on a 3600×2400 sample photo (size 7%, opacity 35%, angle −30°); the download stayed 3600×2400 at 1.07 MB.

A translucent stamp over the content cannot be cleanly reversed, which is why it goes across the content rather than the margins.
Does it work on PDFs?
This tool is for images. For a PDF, export pages with PDF → image, stamp them, and rebuild with images → PDF.
Can I automatically insert today's date into the watermark?
